Director's Abstract

Birgit Ertl is a passionate advocate of Early Childhood Education and has focused her considerable energies in this direction for over 20 years.

Although the exception to many rules, Birgit is living proof of the premise that it takes no ordinary team to run an extraordinary pre-school.

“Without a doubt, the biggest challenge for any Director is to find the right team to deliver the concept and uphold the philosophy of the school.  It’s the human factor that turns the big picture of education into a masterpiece.”

Birgit draws her opinions from a monumental bank of relevant experience.  With a career that has blazed a pioneering trail through some of the most progressive Early Childhood schools in the world, she successfully implemented a bilingual Early Childhood programme in German and English at the Bavarian International School in Munich.  She was a founding member of the United Nations International School of Bangkok where she led the Early Childhood Department.  At the German Swiss International School of Hong Kong, Birgit was the driving force behind the creation of a strong relationship between the English and German streams, and after almost a decade spent devising and then honing her own Early Years concept, Birgit launched The Children’s Garden in Dubai’s Green Community in 2005.

“A good leader requires experience from all sides.  Having taught, having experienced various curricula around the world, worked with different teams and many diverse characters, managed a variety of Early Childhood projects and departments – this first hand experience is what has shaped my understanding and is what underpins my beliefs.  If I hadn’t taught all over the world, I wouldn’t have been able to design the TCG concept.  All these differences – countries, people, teams, environments, resources, parents etc. – this is how I’ve got to where I am now.”

Now, six years after launching her own concept, the skills, confidence and attitudes with which TCG leavers move on to their next schools mean Birgit’s concept and her philosophies on how to run a cutting edge pre-school have a huge and growing crowd of parental and expert supporters.

“I can’t emphasize strongly enough just how crucial teamwork is.  If the team works well, the children will be at their happiest, and they’re the ones who ultimately define the character and spirit of any school.  You can have everything else in place, including the best curriculum in the world, but you’ve got nothing if you don’t have the right people to implement it.  And I believe that’s one thing we do extremely well at TCG – recognize the value of good people.  Doing so is central to our philosophy, essential for our children, and key to our success.”
