The Friendly Octopus

At TCG, we have our very own Maths Coordinator, Miss Nuket, to make sure that our children are introduced to mathematical concepts, right from the tender age of two.  Of course, it's taught in a very age-appropriate way, which means that Maths lessons are bursting with fun, interactive activities.  Miss Nuket, who will sometimes appear as a fairy or a duck, has a friendly octopus who helps the children learn, and he's a big hit.  Below are a few of the parent's comments about this runaway Maths Celebrity!

Natalie Elser, whose son Finlay goes to TCG Green Community, wrote in to tell us about the kind of impact a Maths Octopus can have on the lives of these youngsters...

(October 2009)

"One Thursday at pick up time, my son Finlay rushed out to meet me with even more enthusiasm than usual, with the news that Miss Nuket was letting him take 'Octopus' (the maths guru!) home with us for the weekend...  'Octopus' is a funny chap - a different colour and number on each tentacle, who likes to help Miss Nuket in her maths teaching.  He is also quite particular about the type of play he enjoys - counting games, patterns, building blocks, lego and such - anything relating to numbers, so needless to say, our weekend was busy as we tried to please our guest!  And Finlay proudly told me on the way home that 'Octopus' had taught him how to count all the way to 100 (we counted for the entire half hour journey home!).  We found 'Octopus' to be a very pleasant house guest - he only likes quiet children (!) - certainly no screaming and shouting allowed!  He joined in with many aspects of our life - from bath time to story time, 'Octopus' had to be present.  I'm really pleased that Fin has gained such enthusiasm and understanding for maths, with the help of his new friend!"

Another mother, Toni Gadd, has also written in to tell us about her son Kelvan's reaction to our famous Maths Octopus...

(October 2009)

"Kelvan really loves Octopus and all the activities in Math Club. He is always telling me about the things that you do together. Last week, the morning after Math Club, I woke him up to go to school. The first thing to come out of his mouth when he opened his eyes was 'Mommy, we went to visit number 3's house...!' He must be dreaming about Math Club, and judging by his smiles and enthusiasm, he seems to be having a great time!"
