Topics 2011-2012

Me, Moi, Ana: Sept 11 – Sept 29

A chance for children to familiarise themselves with the school community and to find their place within their class. The topic serves as a way to introduce and establish school and class expectations and behaviour and gives the opportunity to observe the children within the family unit and as part of the local environment. We introduce the concept of recycling as part of each class and throughout the whole school.

Just Digging: Oct 2 – Nov 3

A new addition this year, Just Digging is an opportunity to explore the earth below our feet and all that is hidden there. From plants, to bugs and minibeasts, dinosaurs and fossils, plants and gardening to building sites. The children will be encouraged to develop and engage their own scientific curiosity and enquiry skills.

Colours of the World: Nov 13 – Dec 8

A celebration of our world through its many continents, cultures and colours. A topic which the children's own origins and cultures are shared and explored. A time to taste, smell, listen, see and touch aspects from cultures at home and abroad. This topic provides a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn from one another. Our U.A.E. National Day Celebrations will be held in school on December 1st.

A Few Snowy Days: Dec 11 – Dec 20

In December, whilst Dubai is in its favoured climate, many countries of the world are wrapping up warm and lighting their log fires. It's an experience a number of our children will not yet know of, so we try and bring it to them. A Few Snowy Days is an exploration of seasons, weather and winter celebrations around the world.

Art Attack Week: Jan 8 – Jan 12

Our curriculum is based on creativity. This week gives all the budding artists even more opportunity to handle and explore art materials. The children’s creative juices will be given a boost after the Winter Holiday.

A Healthy Mind, Body and Soul: Jan 15 – Feb 16

With childhood obesity on the rise, there is no time like the present to educate our children on the importance of healthy living. This topic has so much breadth that includes what we put in our bodies to how we take care of our body and mind. It's a time to understand the role of nurses and doctors, be brave and taste new foods, play blindfold games and simply explore what Mother Nature gave us. The annual TCG Sports Day is our featured event during this topic.

Science Week (Little Einsteins): Feb 19 – Feb 23

The children will be amazed at how we can take everyday items and change them through a little scientific wizardry. The power of observation, questioning and predicting will be tested during our many experiments.

At the Seaside: Feb 26 – March 29

We all need to take better care of the environment and all that is in it. Our hope is to encourage the children to care and respect all animals. Children will learn about water and its uses including conservation and how to take better care of our local beach areas and the sea. Water safety and sun protection are also a very important lesson to be learned.

Math Week (Patterns): April 1 – April 4

Patterns are all around us. Have you ever noticed that patterns are everywhere? In nature, in the design of buildings, in the clothes we wear and in the food we prepare. We will look at and create a variety of patterns.

Out of This World: April 15 – May 17

Out of This World is an opportunity to explore outer space and all that goes with it. The solar system, space travel, alien life, light and dark and shadows. This is a predominantly science based topic where the children will be encouraged to develop and engage their own scientific curiosity and enquiry skills.

Book Week: May 20 – May 24

Instilling the love of books in all children is incredibly important. Listening to and reading stories is an essential aspect of our everyday lives. During book week the children will be creating their own stories through role play and art.

When I Grow Up: May 27 – June 26

A topic which supports the children’s ability to cope with change across all age groups. This topic reflects upon the year that has passed and looks forward to the future both near and far. Graduation celebrations and transitions to new teachers and schools are a focal point for the older children while our younger ones can look forward to new TCG classes and teachers for the next academic year. Dreams and exploration of places, people and professions will enable the children to have a glimpse at what their future holds.
